JOHNS ISLAND, SC

Majic Dust is the irrepressible lovechild of the murmurs, screams, noise and harmony of the music that shaped guitarist and vocalist Rob Hampton’s early years. The band was born in a sweat lodge garage on Johns Island, South Carolina with Hampton and drummer Jonathan Carman expelling the ghosts of many past rock n roll ensembles who had haunted the space before them. Since the initial formation the group has picked up JR Spencer as a second guitarist, Ben Mossman on bass and new recruit Adam Pizza laying down the organ tones. The revenants of their collective rock n roll pasts can be felt in every second of the Majic Dust self-titled album. The album opener, “Secrets”, immediately sweeps into propulsive drums and a hypnotic bassline, then moves into a dimension that liquefies rock tropes into a bubble of fuzzy psychedelia. Visions of witches and existential dread compliment the expansive reverberations of “Disappear” while the lamentations of “Where Do We Go From Here?” open new doors of perception. The defiant clarion calls of ”Hands Up”  and “Abandon All Hope” along with the closing slow burner “Rodan Vs. Crain” harken back to the groups musical upbringings and serve as next level detours in the kaleidoscopic trip. The influences that emerge sometimes surprise even Hampton, “I am always amazed how people say we remind them of so many different bands that I never would have guessed, but that I could afterwards see have influenced me.” Regardless of influences, Majic Dust has a direct line to the past and look forward to burning a path into the future.
